Dr. Coplan is speaking at the 30th Annual Colin J. Condron, MD Care of the Sick Child Conference held at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida from November 13th-15th, 2013. The conference is sponsored by Orlando Health, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and The Florida State University College of Medicine. The Annual Care of the Sick Child Conference is specifically designed for pediatricians, primary care physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the care of children. Emphasis is on challenging diagnostic and management dilemmas as well as issues the pediatric provider encounters day to day. Topics are based on current trends. Dr. Coplan gives three presentations at the conference: ASD in 3D: Autism Spectrum Disorder across the Life Span from 2 to 3 PM on November 14th, Behavior Management & Psychopharmacology in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder from 1 -2 PM on November 15th and Mental Health and Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Elephant in the Room from 2 -3 PM on November 15th.

Dr. Coplan will present at the 7th Annual Autism Conference: Building Bridges: Evolving Insights on Autism at the LaSalle University Student Union Building in Philadelphia, PA. The event is sponsored by Green Tree Partnerships, Green Tree School and LaSalle University. It is considered to be one of the largest, most prestigious and highly regarded autism conferences in the region for individuals with autism, their families and the professionals who treat and provide support to this community. The keynote speaker is Dr. Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, who is a noted individual with autism and an autism advocate. Dr. Coplan’s session, Workshop 1, is offered at 10:45 AM until 12:00 Noon and is entitled: Managing Internalizing Behaviors in Children on the Autism Spectrum. Dr. Coplan speaks at the 2013 Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association (DDNA) Annual Education Conference to be held in Philadelphia, PA from April 26th-29th, 2013. The event will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. Dr. Coplan will give two presentations on Sunday, April 28th: “Recognizing Medical Quackery in the Care of Persons with IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities)” from 8:30-10:00 AM, and “Transition to Adulthood for Persons on the Autism Spectrum” from 10:30 AM-12:00 Noon. Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association (DDNA) is a non-profit nursing specialty organization that is committed to advocacy, education, and support for nurses who provide services to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Dr. Coplan speaks at Jewish Learning Venture’s 3rd Annual Inclusion Conference entitled “Opening the Gates of Torah” held on April 28th, 2013 from 9 AM to 4 PM at Old York Road-Temple Beth Am, 971 Old York Road in Abington, PA. Dr. Coplan’s workshop, held at 3 PM, is entitled “A Physician-Sibling’s Reflections“. Dr Coplan is both a developmental pediatrician with 30 years of experience working with children with developmental disabilities and a sibling of an individual with special needs; his presentation will combine these two perspectives within the framework of Jewish values and traditions. He will be joined in his workshop by David Block, an author, freelance journalist, and documentary producer /director who is legally blind and diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Mr. Block’s presentation, entitled “Personal Journey” will focus upon the concept that “disability does not mean inability”, and that people with disabilities are capable individuals. Jewish Learning Venture engages families in Jewish life and learning, and empowers those seeking to make Jewish life, learning and community relevant and meaningful. The Inclusion Conference offers workshops and programs for parents of children with special needs, rabbis, day school principals, religious school and early childhood education directors, synagogue lay leaders, teachers, youth group advisers and camp directors, Jewish communal workers and adults with special needs.

Dr. Coplan speaks at The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) 34th Annual Conference on Pediatric Health Care held April 17th – 20th, 2013 at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando FL. His presentation, on April 17th, 2:00 to 4:30 PM, is entitled Behavior Management and Psychopharmacology in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. NAPNAP is the professional association for PNPs and other advanced practice nurses who care for children. Established in 1973, NAPNAP actively advocates for children’s health through leadership, practice, advocacy, education, and research. Dr. Coplan’s presentation offers a conceptual framework for thinking critically about behavioral issues in children on the autism spectrum with an integration of developmental, behavioral, and pharmacologic principles. Dr. Coplan co-presents “Autism: Medical and Educational Management of Challenging Behavior” at the 2013 Council for Exceptional Children Convention and Expo on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 9 to 11 AM. The CEC conference, which is the largest professional development event dedicated to special and gifted education, is April 3-6, 2013 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Coplan’s co-presenter is Jo Webber, Professor of Special Education at Texas State University (retired) and Adjunct Professor at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. Their two-hour forum, moderated by Brenda Scheuermann, Ph.D., of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University, helps attendees conceptualize the relationship among underlying neuropsychological deficits, external environmental contributors, and outward maladaptive behaviors to enhance their ability to respond effectively, and reduce the likelihood of future recurrence of challenging behavior. Dr, Coplan’s half-day workshop at the 2013 Annual NASP Convention will be held on February 14th, 2013 from 8:30 to 11:30 AM in Seattle, Washington. Entitled “The Developmental Course of Autism Spectrum Disorder Impacts Intervention Selection”, the workshop will describe the evolution of symptoms over time in children with ASD via review of research literature and case presentations. Dr. Coplan will discuss how the concepts of bottom-up and top-down instruction can be used to match the child’s ability to the most appropriate teaching methods. He will also review the neurological basis for maladaptive behaviors in the classroom in children with ASD, and the optimal responses to these behaviors. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is the premier source of knowledge, professional development, and resources, empowering school psychologists to ensure that all children and youth attain optimal learning and mental health. The 2013 NASP Annual Convention will be held from February 12th through February 15th.

Dr. Coplan presents “Maladaptive Behavior in Children on the Autism Spectrum: Looking Beneath the Surface in Order to Achieve Optimum Outcome“, from 8:00 to 9:30 AM on November 9th at the 2012 National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. NAEYC is the world’s largest organization working on behalf of young children, and this event represents the largest gathering of classroom teachers, faculty, administrators, researchers, and other practitioners and contributors in the field of early childhood education. Dr. Coplan’s presentation describes normal development at each developmental stage, and then superimposes a description of maladaptive behaviors seen in children with ASD at each successive stage. Dr. Coplan has been asked to present “Psychopharmacology for Children” at Autism New Jersey’s 30th Annual Conference held October 10-12th at the Atlantic City Convention Center. This event is one of the nation’s largest autism-related conferences. Dr. Coplan’s speaks on Thursday, October 11 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM (Workshop 12/ Session B). He will explain the relationship between neurological deficits (e.g. cognitive rigidity, dysregulation of attention, arousal, sleep and sensory processing) and the behavioral symptoms of ASDs, describe medications that address these deficits, and discuss criteria for deciding whether to begin and how to evaluate medication. The Autism Society of America-Manhattan Chapter sponsors Dr. Coplan’s presentation entitled: “Sense and Nonsense in the Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders” on Thursday evening, June 7th from 6 to 8 PM. It will be held in Room 100 at the Julia Richman Education Complex at 317 East 67th Street, New York, NY. This presentation will provide a set of standards that can be applied to all interventions for ASD to decide if they are worth the risk and expense. Dr. Coplan will describe developmental therapies that have been associated with behavioral deterioration rather than improvement, and biomedical interventions that have been associated with brain damage. As part of the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio’s annual Practical Solutions to Everyday Challenges in Autism workshop series, Dr. Coplan offers a full-day workshop entitled Making Sense of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. This workshop, which will provide a unique overview of ASDs, will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at the Toledo Hospital Education Center Auditorium in Toledo, OH. Dr. Coplan will address typical and atypical development in children and how areas of development are impacted when children are diagnosed with ASD. (Is it normal behavior or is it ASD?) He will examine the behavioral components, impact of IQ, when behavior management is not enough (the use of psychopharmacology), and explore growing up: what the future holds for children with ASD. Dr. Coplan will present a full day workshop to the educational staff of the Bucks County Intermediate Unit on November 8th from 8:30 to 3:00 PM. BCIU is a regional educational service agency which serves the thirteen school districts located within Bucks County. The unit provides a continuum of special education supports and services for students with disabilities. Dr. Coplan’s presentation, which will be held in the auditorium of the Ben Franklin Middle School, is entitled “The Neurodevelopmental Perspective on Behavior and Learning”. This appointment is in recognition of Dr. Coplan’s contribution to the education of Child Psychiatry Fellows from the University of Pennsylvania. With this appointment, Dr. Coplan has attained recognition in all three medical specialties pertaining to child development: Pediatrics (Fellow, American Academy of Pediatrics; Board Certified in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics), Child Neurology (Fellow, Child Neurology Society; Board Certified, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities), and Child Psychiatry.
